The screenshots depict some of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster’s racing at standard resolution with max settings. Both are capture from the PC versions of the respective games. EA has previously detailed some of the changes being made to the game. Interested gamers should look out for higher-quality car models, environmental reflections on the cars, as well as overall improved lighting. EA has selected its screenshots to best show off these features.

There are four sets of comparison screenshots in total. The first is in bright light in a setting with a lot of environmental clutter. It shows how the developers have added objects to the environment, but also how the draw distance has improved so there’s more on-screen at one time. The second set similarly shows added details, with more barrels, signage, and trees. The third set features much darker lighting, showing off improved visibility, as better shadow effects. The last seems specifically designed to show how dramatically better shadows are in the remaster.
In other words, this is a great chance for prospective buyers of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster to see whether the game’s been updated enough to be worth a purchase. The game was originally released 10 years ago, after all. And while it was a hit at the time, winning a variety of awards for Best Racing Game, 10 years is a long time.
Some believe EA is releasing these screenshots specifically in response to criticism of the game since its announcement. Comparison footage of early Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster gameplay was made by Youtubers, which went viral. The footage, as well as the commentary surrounding it, was not particularly complimentary of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster.
Even if it’s not a spectacular visual overhaul, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster isn’t without an upside. It’s still an opportunity to revisit one of the best games of 2010, a racing game that fans still recall fondly even a decade later. It’ll also have cross-platform play and multiplayer added, as EA has promised. And, considering how bleak the racing game genre release schedule is otherwise, it’s there when racing game fans need it.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remaster releases November 6 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, followed by a November 13 launch on Switch.
