Posted to the sub-Reddit r/Overwatch by Reddit user u/rererenore_ow, the image combines Joe with Overwatch’s Genji to great effect making for a crossover that feels like it should have been in the works years ago. The image has Genji posed in one of Joe’s iconic action stances that’s been seen on different marketing material for the short-lived classic Capcom franchise.

Genji himself isn’t in his standard outfit in the fanart but instead wearing the sentai skin that was made available for players to get in 2017. The skin has frequently been compared to different Power Rangers, especially the Green Ranger based on its color, but it really fits with Viewtiful Joe’s character design, especially due to both outfits having a large protruding “V” extending off of their helmets from the character’s visors.
Commenters on the original post are calling for Viewtiful Joe to return in some form or another whether through official remasters on console and PC or through a reboot of/sequel to the original series. Commenters also point out that the Kanji behind the image translates to say “transformation” which is a line that Genji sometimes says while the skin is equipped and Viewtiful Joe has also said the line.
Recently, Overwatch fans discovered that the upcoming Blizzcon scheduled for February has been cancelled until further notice as Blizzard continues to undergo investigation in the lawsuit that alleges that the company is mistreating its employees. While it’s certainly disappointing for fans anticipating the convention, the general response to the cancellation has been positive as the acts brought forward in the lawsuit have made many fans reconsider their relationship with the company and are happy to hear that it’s devoting the resources that it would have spent on Blizzcon to “supporting [its] team.”
Related to the lawsuit, Overwatch also announced that fan favourite character, McCree, has been renamed Cole Cassidy following the outing of Jesse McCree, one of the Blizzard employees who contributed to the hostile work environment that had been formed at the company. There’s still a lot happening in regards to the lawsuit as well as how the company is handling things with its fans, but it’s nice to see that it’s working on making symbolic gestures to rebuild trust with its community.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
