As a sci-fi game with consistently high review scores, the original Dead Space brought something much needed to the genre. While iconic franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill were still releasing titles — though the former would lose its survival horror identity somewhat before the reboot, while many gamers felt that the latter could not capture the magic of its second entry — horror had not seen something exciting and fresh for a while. Then Dead Space was released, taking cues from films like The Thing and Event Horizon, and praised for its oppressive atmosphere and body horror.

Now, with the remake just around the corner, nearly 20 minutes of footage from Dead Space shows the first few moments of this new take on what many would consider a classic horror game. Released on the IGN YouTube channel, the video reveals the opening as the repair vessel Kellion approaches the USG Ishimura where the events of the game take place. Many watching the footage will obviously be familiar with what’s on display, though the remake provides not only being a fresh coat of a paint, but a complete rebuild of the 14-year-old title.
One thing that many will notice is that Isaac Clarke has been given a voice in the Dead Space remake, whereas he was more of a Gordon Freeman-esque silent protagonist in the original. It’s possible that some may be put off by this idea, but it at least allows for some back and forth banter between him and the rest of the crew. It’s also worth remembering that Clarke did have dialogue in the second and third installments, voiced by Gunner Wright, who reprises the role for the remake.
With the remake of Resident Evil 4 arriving in March, there will be even more choice for horror fans when it comes to modern takes on classic games. With 2019’s RE2 remake setting the bar, a lot of studios and publishers have seen the value in bringing back older titles for newer audiences, so hopefully Dead Space will be well received.
Dead Space will release on January 27, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
